Description:

The 5-HIAA test measures the amount of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, a breakdown product of serotonin, in the urine collected over a 24-hour period.
Primarily used to diagnose and monitor carcinoid tumors, especially those that produce serotonin.
These tumors are most commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract or lungs.

Sample Type:  50 ml. (10 ml. Minimum) well mixed aliquot of 24-Hour urine in a sterile screw capped plastic container. Collect urine with appropriate volume of 50% HCL (6N HCL) to maintain pH between1- 3. Do not use concentrated HCL. Record 24-hour volume on test requisition form & urine container.
Instruction:  The patient should strictly avoid plum, banana, Kiwis, walnut, avocado, eggplant, pineapple, tomato & drugs including paracetamol, melphalan, fluorouracil, isoniazid, salicylates, heparin, L – dopa, MAO inhibitors, promethazine, phenothiazines, imipramine & alcoholic beverages, tea/coffee, caffeine, tobacco & stressful exercise at least 3 days before & during specimen collection.
